You get six minutes to take out as many enemy units and buildings as you can, with no retaliation. You start off at the top of the map, with the Terrans on the left side, and the Protoss on the right. I have three main missions and one bonus mission to go until I finally, after years of trying, complete StarCraft: Brood War. Even though I’ve recorded several videos of StarCraft using it. When I tried recording my StarCraft session last night, it told me it’s not a supported game. And many times, when I do record, it won’t record in the resolution that’s clearly stated in its own settings. It doesn’t work half the time when I want to record. I tried recording a video of my time on this map, but Nvidia’s Shadowplay sucks. Zerg Guardians work well for destroying a Terran base. Having upgraded flying units definitely makes the difference on this map. Little adjustments and nuance in your strategy can make all the difference in a game like StarCraft. It only took about an hour to get back to where I was, and the map went smoother after that. I tried to make it work without properly upgraded flying units, but ended up having to start over. In fact, until you move in on their base to destroy it, they don’t attack you at all. If you’ve already fought your way past and destroyed the enemy Zerg, the Terrans don’t provide much resistance on this map. After destroying the renegade Zerg bases, you move in on the Terran base. There’s also a large Terran base with 30 scientists who you have to kill that are controlling the renegade Zerg broods. Lurkers work well for base ground defense.
As a result, I didn’t properly upgrade my flyers, which is key. When I played this map the first time, I made the mistake of not scouting the terrain, and didn’t know I was on an island. You start in the middle of the map, surrounded by several other enemy Zerg broods, and one Terran base. Once you know what to do, playing them from the start becomes that much more fun.Īfter the last two maps, this one was simpler by comparison. Once you develop a sound strategy, the execution of it becomes easier. It’s almost like a puzzle in that respect. With many of the maps, the difficult part is figuring out an effective strategy. As for raw difficulty, StarCraft: Brood War has them both beat. I’ve beaten the expansions to Warcraft II and Warcraft III. But this is the most difficult map, not just of StarCraft, but of any Blizzard strategy game I’ve played. Hydralisks and spore colonies is all you get for air defense.Īnd with some patience, it worked out pretty well. I bred as many Hydralisks as I could, set up spore colonies underneath the mesa my sunken colonies were on, and hoped for the best. When four of them come strolling down and start tearing up your base, you better be ready. But Protoss Carriers are hard to take down. Having a Ghost definitely helps with his Lockdown ability. You have no flying units of your own to meet them with, so you’re dependent on Hydralisks and spore colonies.
This makes all the difference.Īnd the game isn’t shy about sending flying units on this map. They can drop any units they want next to my sunken colonies because they’ll get destroyed in a few seconds. They have to use flying units to get at me.
That makes it almost impossible for the enemy to run any ground units to my base. So the answer to that is to use sunken colonies instead. The enemy’s transport units fly suicide missions and drop units right next to my colonies. And since Duran is a Ghost, being able to use his Cloak ability is helpful.īut using the spore colonies didn’t work like I wanted. This is especially helpful when the enemy flies down detector units that can detect cloaked units. Any enemy flying units that got close paid the price. But then I got the idea to build a Hatchery up there, along with a bunch of spore colonies. I didn’t realize that even a fully upgraded Lurker still only does half the damage of a sunken colony.Īlso, I tried using the mesa right next to my base as a watchtower using Duran. My first mistake was trying to exclusively use Lurkers for base ground defense. So once again, after making some headway, I had to start this map over from scratch several times. My lovely sunken colonies and my Hatchery. And getting your base locked down becomes more of a challenge. But, since you have no combat flying units, being able to defend those resources while harvesting them isn’t as easy as it would normally be. This map has plenty of resources close by to achieve the mission objective. That leaves you nothing with ground assault units to take on a giant Protoss base and army. You start against a massive Protoss base into which you have to infiltrate your hero Ghost unit Duran to abduct the Protoss matriarch Raszagal. I’m down to the last stretch in StarCraft: Remastered.
